Excellence only foiled by uninspired solo piano affairs, 2006-01-23

Having this mini OST for a couple of days and it's a lovely lil' accompaniment. I haven't heard the music from the original OST but after listening to this I've ordered it along with the 'Stella Deus Another Legend?f which, buying two CDs after hearing 8 odd tracks isn't usual for me.

I'm a massive Sakimoto fan (as you may figure out in the forum) and I couldn't wait to listen to his tracks. However, I was in for a shock. My favourite pieces are NOT all his (!?). Iwata, a composer who I never thought of as all that surprisingly grabbed me on this CD.

'Ancient Wind' is a typical yet beautiful introduction, a simple melodic style using low brass imitations with a beautiful xylophone and flute accompaniment. The second tune 'Civil Water' which includes an accordion theme tune and an electric guitar is like nothing like I've heard him make before.

This would've won the prize for most original score on the track if it weren't for the mellowed out 'Earth Activity'. This is something straight out of a chill out compilation album. It has that Jazz backbeat bass structure with those tingling keyboard tunes that just can't fail to make you feel heart peaceful.

Sakimoto' 'Sky Ray', remains my favourite piece (however, for the first few days I though Iwata composed this, as 'Ancient Wind' sounds so much more Sakimoto than 'Sky Ray' does). This is a piano solo with flute and synth. Think of 'Lost Forest' in Legaia 2 but a little less complex and you got it.

The only letdown of the CD is the usual case with arranged CDs. The crummy solo piano pieces. Sure, I'm a little biased towards piano solos but my love for 'Feel Refreshed' (Star Ocean 2) amongst others proves I don't completely loath them if they're done right. It's just that, if they're going to include 2-3 solo piano pieces they may as well make them a little inspired and different which these ones are not. Even Sakimoto' happier 'Planet She' doesn't revive my hopes of this stale musical approach that always seems to be the no.1 suspect when people have run out of ideas.

However, the 4 tracks, which are good, are more than exceptional. Like I wrote, I haven't heard the original versions yet but I can't wait. More promotion albums please (if not a little cheaper)!
